Theme: "Plant America: Grow, Share, and Connect"
In the Fall of 2020, it became evident that we would have to alter our plans for the 2021 Conference and Annual Meeting. Fortunately, we already were meeting via Zoom and had held several successful Zoom events. The theme for the conference was “Plant It Forward” and the planning committee’s goal was to provide programs that would focus on planting Natives and Gardening with Nature, our 2021-2023 project.
Over the course of three days, we offered speakers, vendor shopping, our annual meeting and installation of officers by NGC President Mary Warshauer. Our keynote speaker was Doug Tallamy, author of Nature’s Best Hope and founder of Homegrown National Park. ™ In addition, Janet Macunovich spoke about the importance of planting trees with her presentation, “Plant it Well, even if the Roots are Wrong.” Michigan’s former president Carol Brodbeck talked about “Good Bug, Bad Bug-Do You Know the Difference?" and Stacey Hirvela focused our attention on growing “Trees, Shrubs and Vines: Michigan Woody Natives for Glorious Gardens.”
These speakers brought a wealth of knowledge to the 258 registered participants. A new adventure and leap of faith allowed us to connect with our membership and offer many a chance to attend our Annual Meeting and Conference that had never attended before.
